Telemetry

Telemetry is, watching or checking a system or facility with cable or wireless from a distance. Today, when Telemetry was mentioned wireless cominication is understood. One of the most intensively used are Radio modem devices, GSM, GPRS, VSAT satellite systems.

Some of the Telemetry and Telecontrol system sample applications are, following up the oil,gas and water pipe lines, foolowing up the cathodic protection systems, remote monitoring of the satellite and telecom antennas, monitoring of drinking water and wastewater facilities, depending on the level of water pumps in water tank, comes to play or occurs, remote monitoring of substations and electric meters.

Operation:

The land, which communication will be provided, must be flat. There shouldn’t be anything between antennas to block comminication like mountain or hill and the distance from point to point must be under 50 km.

GSM and GPRS are used more to use the information of the datalogger in telemetry devicess, not online and also used to send alarms to mobile phones for important events and alarms .

Where radio modem at VSAT satellite systems is not appropriate, VSAT systems can be used for online monitoring. Also  in short range applications, low-power radio solutions SRD (Short Range Device)or  ISM (Industrial-Scientific-Medical) radio bands and 0-27 dBm (up to 500 mW) broadcast power 433MHz, 868MHz, 2.4GHz and in bands of 5.8/5.9 GHz, unlicensed radio telemetry apllications are becoming increasingy common.

Especially in wireless sensor network applications millions of end units are equiped with ISM band radio interface .

Although Telemetry applications are mostly wireless, it can be realized with different comminication devecies and environments. For example, optical cable (fiber), power line carrier, analog phone lines, digital phone lines(ISDN/DSL),infra-red (IR), sound waves(acoustic-ultrasonic), microwave comminication and etc.
